Getting Organized!

Even though I didn't have enough maple leaf blocks to complete the quilt top yet......I began sewing the blocks together. I really didn't have a plan when I started this quilt top. I had bought 2 yards of the leaf fabric to incorporate into the quilt somehow....just wasn't sure how? I thought about setting the blocks in vertical stripes with stripes of the leaf fabric between. But, then, I saw a scrappy quilt set like this. Pieced block next to fabric block, set on the diagonal.....LOVED it! I had JUST enough fabric to cut the blocks/triangles for the size I was planning! I think it's turning out pretty good for having NO PLAN!
I still need to make a few pieced blocks to complete the quilt top. However, I was out of the cream background color squares. I knew I'd have to "dig" through my box of quilt fabric to find the fabric to cut more squares. That thought led me to deciding to organize that box a little. I didn't take pictures of the WHOLE process, but here it is in a nutshell. After dumping the entire box on the floor, I started by folding the fabrics into manageable sizes and sorted by color. Any piece of small/odd shaped pieces I put into a pile.

What a mess! I had a plan though. I started by ironing each piece. Then, I cut as many 3-1/2" squares or 3-7/8" squares (cut into half-square triangles) as I could get out of each fabric. Then, if I had anything left, I cut as many 1-3/4" strips out of it as I could. I put each square, triangle, and strip into their own organizer drawer. So this......

Went to this......

Strips......

Triangles......

Squares......

Notice.....I even put some presewn (half-square triangles) in this drawer.

So-o-o-o-o-o much better! Now, I'm ready to start piecing a few more things I have planned!

Happy Organizing!
